Workshop Dates 2010

DATE CHANGED – New date soon – Silver wire linked bracelet jewellery workshop – Georgina Franklin & Sue Lane

Student work

Time: 10am – 4pm. Cost: £90. Includes £10 of silver.

You will be able to make a silver bracelet, using links in a contemporary design. You can follow one of the examples given on the day, or design your own. Learn basic silversmithing skills including making multiple links in different shapes and forms, texturing, soldering, joining together and finally how to make simple clasps. You can incorporate beads within your piece if you wish.  If you prefer to make a necklace, this may be possible, but you will need to purchase more silver on the day.

17/04/10 – Claw setting jewellery workshop – Georgina Franklin

Time: 10am – 4pm. Cost: £85. Includes £5 silver, facetted stones can be purchased on the day.

You will learn how to make a claw or wire setting and set a facetted stone (either your own stone or one purchased on the day). Experienced students wishing to learn and practise the technique can work on several projects, or beginners can make a ring, pendant or brooch using one setting following some examples made by Georgina.


15/05/10 – Sand casting in silver jewellery workshop – Sue Lane

Time: 10am – 4pm. Cost: £85. Price includes £5 of silver.

Sue will demonstrate the technique, by where you take a sand mould of anything from keys, to twigs, buttons to coins. The silver is melted and poured into your mould. You can expect to cast about 6 times during the day, and in the afternoon you can soldered attachments to make your castings into wearable jewellery.

Please bring small items to cast from.

You may need to pay extra for silver if you choose to keep all your castings.

05/06/10 – General silver working day jewellery workshop – Georgina Franklin & Sue Lane

Time: 10am – 4pm. Cost: £80. Price does not include any metal, you can buy on the day or bring your own.

Today is a chance for students to work on individual projects in silver or gold and it covers all levels of ability. If you have a particular project in mind you can talk to Sue prior to the day, to ensure it is possible to complete in the time available, or you can follow one of the many examples Sue will provide.


03/07/10 – Reticulation and fusing jewellery workshop – Georgina Franklin

Time: 10am – 4pm. Cost: £88. Includes £8 of silver.

Reticulation and Fusing Workshop

Using silver you will learn how to texture the surface of sheet using heat to give a very natural almost moon like surface, and then different ways of shaping and finishing to bring out the texture further. Also you will learn how to fuse silver to silver in a simple way with no solder. (If you took part in the fusing workshop in 2008 with Wally Gilbert this is a different simpler method and therefore gives different results). You can choose to make your piece with either reticulation or fusing or combine the two on one project. Earrings or a pendant would be ideal for this project.


31/07/10 – Silver forged bangle jewellery workshop – Georgina Franklin

Time: 10am – 4pm. Cost: £90. Includes £10 silver.

Create your own unique hand forged silver bangle using the technique of cold forging. Learn about and experience the different tools (hammers/steel stakes) involved in the processes to shape the silver into an elegant flowing form with a planished / polished or textured finish.

Time: 10am – 4pm. Cost: £90. Includes £7 silver.

Today’s project will be to make a simple contemporary locket or small box with a hinged lid. Incorporating using a fly press to create the shapes – a really interesting process, which gives impressive results quickly, and then how to make a simple hinge, and finish the piece by polishing or matting. Today will require you to follow one of the samples made by Bronwyn, though this still allows for creativity. This course is suitable for all levels of ability – even beginners.
